patchouli

THE APHRODISIAC HERB

AROUSING SENSUALITY, CONFIDENCE & FREEDOM • INDIA

This aromatic herb has derived its name from the Tamil words ‘patchai’ denoting green and ‘ellai’ meaning leaf. In India, people use patchouli on valuable clothing and carpets to repel moths. The famous Indian cashmere shawls were delicately scented by being stored in wooden containers aromatized with Patchouli

Centuries later, Patchouli arrived in the Middle East along the silk trading routes, and supposedly it was Napoleon who introduced the exotic and intoxicating scent to Europe. The Arabs took large quantities of Patchouli with them on pilgrimages, stuffing it into mattresses and pillows to ward off contagious disease.

Most people know Patchouli as the ever popular incense scent from the Sixties, when it seemed to be every flower child's favorite perfume. The scent has a reputation as an aphrodisiac, and is said to attract the opposite sex. Patchouli's effect is deeply relaxing and sedating, and can greatly improve a mediation practice by soothing the mind from excess thoughts and worry. Its deep and musky scent can be arousing, allowing a sense of confidence and freedom.

Palo Santo

HOLY WOOD

CLEARS ENERGY, HEIGHTENS CREATIVITY & COSMIC CONNECTIONS • PERU

In Spanish, Palo Santo literally means “Holy Wood." It is a sacred and mystical tree that grows in select coastal parts of South America, Ecuador and Peru. Its use as an essential plant medicine tool dates back to antiquity with the Incas – the indigenous people of the Andes. The lifespan of a Palo Santo tree is around 40-90 years. When the tree dies naturally and falls, it remains preserved for at least four years before any wood is harvested for rituals. The fallen tree undergoes sacred transformation and produces its unique scent during this time. No trees are destroyed in the harvesting of our wood.

Similar to the ceremonial White Sage and Cedar of North America, Palo Santo is used as smudge sticks to shed "mala energia" or bad energy – spiritually clearing a space, crowd or person. The uplifting scent of the rising smoke is said to enter the “energy field" to raise the energetic vibrational level and to bring a deeper connection to Mother Earth and the Cosmic Source.

Oakmoss

THE VOICE OF MOTHER NATURE

GROUNDING, ENHANCES SENSITIVITY & AWARENESS • CANADA

One of about ten species of lichens in the genus, oakmoss is extremely difficult to cultivate but grows naturally in unpolluted atmospheres. It has a very complex ecology and reproductive biology which has proven to produce little success in propagation. Their growth cycle is so slow as to be almost timeless and they are among the oldest living things on the planet. It embodies the spirit of an ancient forest.

In ancient times it was imported from Greece and Cyprus to Egypt for packing embalmed mummies. American Indians have long used various lichens for food, medicine and as natural dyes. Today it is one of the finest perfumery materials available and there are few high-class perfumes that do not contain at least a touch of Oakmoss essential oil.

Oakmoss can be used to attune to the spirit of the forest and the Gods of nature. It is grounding and sensual in an earthy way. It enhances sensitivity and awareness and may be used by those who wish to listen to the nature spirits and the voice of Mother Earth. There is a raw, Pan-like erotic energy to this scent, a little wild and unpredictable. It is also associated with money magic and abundance.

Dammar

"LIGHT" OF JOY

LIGHTNESS OF BEING & STRENGHTENS KNOWLEDGE • INDONESIA

One of the most important hardwood timber species in India and Nepal is the large semi-deciduous tree that produces the Dammar resin. The tree is an object of worship for Buddhists and Hindus in India and yields either a transparent whitish or solid brownish resin, which is highly prized for incense use.

In the Malaysian language, the word ‘Dammar’ means "light," which describes its ethereal nature in lifting the spirit and bringing light to the depth of the soul,  particularly in times of sadness, melancholy, or grief. The resin is associated with the element of air and burned for the purposes of healing, protection, evocation, and knowledge.

Hinoki

FIVE SACRED TREES OF KISO

PEACE OF MIND & NEW POTENTIALITY • JAPAN

Hinoki, as documented in the Nihon Shiki – one of Japan's oldest books, is “a good tree for building palaces” and was widely used as a building material for temples, shrines, palaces, imperial courts, and sacred baths. The Hinoki cypress tree gets its name from the Japanese phrase “hi no ki" which means "tree of the sun," the sun symbolizes the highest being at the time.

Because Hinoki only grows in virgin areas of central Japan, it is classified as one of the FIVE SACRED TREES OF KISO and is environmentally protected. This purity reflects in the wood's appearance: light-colored with a rich straight grainThis highly rot-resistant wood is not only beautiful to behold, its power seems to cleanse and purify us in mysterious ways. Hinoki's crisp, woodsy, lemony-scent is known to help relieve anxiety and promote peace of mind by balancing the activity of the parasympathetic (unconscious) nervous system. In this relaxed state, the mind is more open to receptivity and new potentality.

Copal

YOUNG AMBER

CLEARS, ALIGNS & OPENS AWARENESS • MEXICO

Throughout Mesoamerica, and especially in Mexico, mass amounts of Copal resin were burned atop the Aztec and Mayan pyramids as sacred offerings to the gods and deities. In the Mayan ruins, Copal was discovered in the burial grounds, proving its spiritual significance. The word Copal is derived from the Nahuatl language word Copalli, meaning "incense." Copal resin has been called "Young Amber" because it is the sub-fossilized stage of real Amber, which can be millions of years old.

Copal is thought to be the energizing force of the sun with the grounding, transmuting properties of earth. Copal's powerful, crisp, piney-lemony fragrance purifies the energy in a space as well as the one's energetic field. The burning of Copal calls upon the wisdom of The Greater Mystery and links to the Crown chakra by removing energy blocks, aligning the physical with the etheric bodies and awakening psychic abilities. Highly protective, Copal also aids in the manifestation of ideas to reality.

Yerba Santa

SACRED HERB

RELEASES BLOCKS & AWAKENS SOUL EXPRESSION • NORTH AMERICA

Yerba Santa is known as “Sacred Herb.” This cure-all plant medicine was extensively used by Native Americans healers and early settlers. The name Yerba Santa meaning “Holy Herb” was given by the Spanish priests who learned of the medicinal and healing value of the shrub from the Native Americans. Traditionally used in the Southwest as a smudge/incense or burned in sacred ceremony, Yerba Santa is utilize for setting boundaries, protection, empowerment, courage, growth and beauty.

Belonging to the Hydrophyllaceae (Waterleaf) family, Yerba Santa is believed to regulate the water element in the body. Emotional and soul blockages are stored in the deeper cavities of the body, particularly in the heart and lung regions. The respiratory benefits of Yerba Santa allows for the free flowing, or "breathing out" thus releasing the lungs and heart of those stored blockages, physically and spiritually. This creates the new space for self awakening and a high consciousness.

CLEANSES & DEEPENS THE SOUL CONNECTION • BRAZIL

Cleanses & Deepens The Soul Connection

Breuzinho (Breu Claro) is a resin extracted from the Almecega tree in the Amazonian rainforest. Sacred to the local indigenous people, it is used in ceremonies, healing rituals, and to harness good energies. Also known as "The Frankincense of Amazonia," it was a holy resin to the Mayans as well. Breuzinho contains the spirit of the Mighty Jaguar – a powerful protector and transformer.

Similar to Frankincense and Copal in its ability to cleanse and purify energies, the deep scent of Breuzinho is however more complex in its effects on the unconscious plane – in the mystical and dreams states of the brain. It is known to be grounding as well as helping to bring in creative energies – connecting us to the deeper levels of the soul.

"Today, incenses continue to play a significant ceremonial and symbolic role during the commencement of entheogenic rituals around the world. Breuzinho is the main incense burned by the partakers of the sacred Ayahuasca and the Santo Daime movement."

FRANKINCENSE TREE

DEEP GROUNDING & KNOWING • ETHIOPIA

Boswellia is a tree that produces the resin known as Frankincense. The trees require an arid climate where moisture is provided by morning mist. The few ideal environments in the world for this small prized tree are found in Southern Arabia (Oman and Yemen), India, and Northern Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Kenya). Further, Boswellia trees require a limestone-rich soil and are mostly found growing on rocky hillsides and cliffs, or in the dried riverbeds below. Harvesting can be a very dangerous task which makes the Boswellia tree truly rare and sacred.

Frankincense

ANCIENT "GOLD" RESIN

MEDITATIVE & AWAKENS SPIRITUAL AWARENESS • ETHIOPIA

Frankincense is one of the oldest documented holy resins – traded in Northern Africa and parts of the Arab world for nearly five thousand years.  Harvested from the family of Boswellia trees, Frankincense appeared in the story of the birth of Jesus as one of the three gifts the Three Wise Men bestowed. At that time, its value outweighed that of gold. In ancient Egypt, Frankincense was burnt to honor the Sun-God Ra  to breathe in Frankincense is to breathe in tradition.

Associated with the Third-Eye chakra, Frankincense aids in opening the doors of perception to transcendence. “Frankincense accesses a higher state of consciousness, connecting the individual to universal spirituality. On a practical level, with its ability to still the mind and deepen the breath, it aids contemplation and meditation. Frankincense, the ancient pathway to prayer, still has the potential to enable the soul to soar.” - Juliet Highet (Frankincense: Oman's Gift to the World)

Cedar Leaves

FIRST TREE IN CREATION

CLEARS, CONNECTS & HONORS HIGHER REALMS • NORTH AMERICA

The Cedar tree is Indigenous to the Lebanese mountains, the Southwest of Turkey, Cyprus, the Atlas Mountains, the Himalayas, as well as found in Asia, Africa, and North America. Cedar was the "First Tree in Creation" and sacred in its own rite. Like Sage and Sweetgrass, Cedar is used by Native American tribes in purification, fasting, and sweat lodge ceremonies as an act of cleansing, connecting and honoring higher spirits – the prayers rising with the Cedar smoke on their way to the Creator.

Processing higher power in its natural state, the Cedar leaves when dried and burned as an incense harmonizes the emotions and creates a peaceful state of mind for meditation. It's believed to banish nightmares, night terrors, and malevolent influences and thought forms. The refreshing, woodsy fragrant smoke protects and cleanses against spiritual “residue,” smoothing over stress and fear, dispelling uncertainty and worries – all to create a peaceful night's rest.

Lavender

MAGICAL HERB

BRINGS PEACE TO MIND & BODY • FRANCE

The sweet scent of Lavender has been a coveted herb since the dawn of time and utilized in many early civilizations like Egypt, Greece, and Rome. The word Lavender comes from the Latin phrase Lavera, which means “to wash,” as the Ancient Romans used lavender in their public baths. Ancient Egyptians used Lavender in their mummifying process, as well as for perfuming their clothing and anointing their bodies. In folklore, carrying Lavender brings protection, strength, and courage as well as attracting love.

There is no wonder to Lavender's popularity as its gentle but powerful abilities to ease the nervous system, reduce anxiety, conjure feelings of balance and peace, encourage compassion, treat restlessness and induce restful night's sleep. Its mysterious powers extend in helping to reach a deeper spiritual connection and higher purpose in meditation as Lavender is associated with the Third-Eye chakra.
